Negotiating productivity & publication in neurodiverse collaboration

Monday, 8 December 2025, 11AM – 12.30PM GMT | Online Workshop

Previous research has highlighted how chronic illness, disability, and neurodivergence can make it difficult—if not impossible—for academics to keep up with the relentless culture of overwork and hyper-productivity that characterizes neoliberal academia (see, for example, Evans et al., 2024; Kaufman et al., 2024). Living “on crip time by necessity” does not merely risk leaving these scholars “behind” in terms of publication output and career progression; it also renders them more vulnerable to having their ideas—shared in conference presentations or informal collegial settings—taken up and circulated by others without proper acknowledgement or credit. One might assume that collaborations with other neurodivergent academics would mitigate such pressures and risks, creating a more supportive and accommodating environment. In this brief talk I will offer (anecdotal) evidence to the contrary and invite discussion on how we might renegotiate and reimagine the very terms of productivity, authorship, and publication within such collaborative spaces.

Participation: The event will start with a brief introduction by the presenter, followed by discussions in smaller groups and in the plenum.

Moderation: Katrin Heimann is trained in Philosophy and Cognitive Sciences, has worked with transformative pedagogy in different contexts and has more recently found her home in higher education research and university teacher training. As an Assistant Professor at the Center for Educational Development at Aarhus University in Denmark, she trains academic staff in matters of diversity equity and inclusion and leads several participatory research projects focusing on diversity affirmative teaching as well as research, with a special focus on neurodiversity (considered from an intersectional lens).
